have a clue. number two, as bill clinton and president obama point out, the math doesn't add up when you're trying to do this just on deductions. you need to do both deductions and loopholes and, of course, raise the rate. that's the only way the math works. and as far as hurt the economy, let me say for the 10,000th time, bill clinton raised tax rates on the top 2% in 1993 and we then proceeded to grow the economy by 23 million jobs. so, that's a bunch of bull, speaker boehner. >> let's go back to alex with the same question. i will argue that even though he hasn't specified the deductions or the loopholes he's going to close, the governor is right, there isn't enough at the top to close to make up for this advantage they have now but it seems he's accepting the moral argument. he's saying, the rich should get socked, too. that was an amazing admission for him to say to that. your thoughts. >> i agree with you. the fact that john boehner is out there saying we are asking the rich to pay more in taxes is not something they ever would have done in 2011. if you remember, math by detail

remember what republicans called their bill to repeal obama care? i do. it was an act to repeal the job killing health care law. now, the whole job killing thing has always been a bit of a talking point myth. a nonpartisan study of the very similar health insurance mandate enacted six years in massachusetts showed, quote, no evidence of reduced employment as a result of health reform there. still, that argument, the whole job killing obama care thing, sent the owner of red lobster and a bunch of other very carb friendly restaurant chains on a hapless misadventure in corporate protest that culminated today in a public and embarrassing and informative way. back in october, company called darden restaurants announced they were putting more workers on part-time status in stead of full-time to see if they would be able to limit the cost of complying with the new health reform law. under the new law, big companies like darden have to either offer health insurance or pay a $2,000 fine for each full-time employee. over 30 employees who ends up using public subsidies to buy health care. you

unions, 24% say same-sex couples should not be allowed to enter in any union. president obama has come out in favor of same-sex marriage though he wants to leave it to the state issue. some people as bill suggested are comparing this to the 70s when opinion was evolving on abortion. the states seemed to work it out and the court came down with a big ruling and 40 years later we're having a holy war on the issue. how do you see the court reacting? do you see some creating a constitutional right or are they narrow and modest? >> it would be a surprise if they did a broad ruling. justice -- that map tells the story when you look at that many states who have banned it versus how many approved it. it gives you a sense of where the country is. it's moving in the direction and i do expect at some point it will be -- the court will rule on it and rule it is a constitutional right, which is my personal view. but i think right now i would expect them to do something more narrow, maybe like the appeals court did in california. the lower court found it was a constitutional right and appeals court

state because, well, obviously president obama is a secret muslim, or so says the bill's republican author in michigan. all of this stuff is being passed and signed or debated in michigan this week, after state republicans there passed their monumental legislation stripping union rights in the state. with no warning and no debate after an election in which they did not say that was what they were going to do. that surprise attack legislation passed in such a breathless hurry there are now lawsuits in the state whether the bills were passed illegally, in contradiction of the state's sunshine laws. they're also trying to figure out whether the new union-stripping laws in michigan will apply to workers who work for the state government, or if they only killed the unions in the private sector. but the reason that governor snyder has been able to do all of this in such a hurry, the reason he was able to make the 180 he pulled on stripping union rights, for example, the reason he is able to purchase saul the anti-abortion and the anti-sharia law legislation is because he can, right? michi

take the cake. he threatened to filibuster his own bill. mcconnell proposed legislation to give the president the authority to raise the debt ceiling. under the plan, congress would need a two-thirds majority to stop him. it's a proposal that president obama likes. so why would mitch mcconnell propose such a bill? to embarrass the democrats. he wanted to prove that the democrats didn't have the votes for the legislation. harry reid called his bluff and objected to putting the bill up for a vote, but after discussing it with his democratic members he got the support he needed and had a change of heart. claire mccaskill was priding when mcconnell objected to voting on the bill. >> is there an objection to the original request? >> objection is heard. i got whiplash. >> very strange. >> dick durbin reacted to mcconnell's move moments later. >> so this may be a moment in senate history when a senator made a proposal and when given an opportunity for a vote, filibustered his own proposal. i think we have now reached a new spot in the history of the senate we have never seen before. >> let
